In 2026, two major milestones are being recognized around the world and across the country: the United Nations’ International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists and America’s 250th anniversary.

To celebrate, the South Dakota Grasslands Initiative has launched the 46.9 for the Grasslands Challenge, a statewide effort encouraging people to get outside and experience South Dakota’s grasslands.

Participants are encouraged to walk, hike, ride, or otherwise spend time on grasslands while completing 46.9 miles. That distance represents the 46.9 million acres of grasslands that existed in South Dakota 250 years ago.

Participants can log their miles through the South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks’ Walk 250 program. Miles completed during the 46.9 Challenge may also count toward the statewide 250-mile challenge, giving participants the chance to earn recognition and prizes while exploring South Dakota’s landscapes. Prizes will be awarded to those who complete 250 miles by July 4, 2026.

South Dakota’s grasslands play a vital role in supporting ranching operations, wildlife habitat, water quality, and overall land health. This challenge offers a simple way for individuals, families, and communities to connect with that landscape - one mile at a time.
